The construction, deconstruction and reconstruction of an off road motor home
Home
The 4x4 Canter off-road motorhome is the latest in a string of motorhomes I've built and lived in over the years. Others include a Mercedes ex Post truck, a 1951 model Leyland bus, a couple of International ex-ambulances, a Mazda bus and my (till recently) home on wheels - a 40 foot Leyland bus complete with verandah, picket fence, French doors and jarrah deck.
The Canter project was cunningly designed to rid me of my money while giving me a creative outlet (other than socially unacceptable ones such as spray painting public property). The intention was to be able to live away from civilisation for months at a time and soak up the peace of such places as the Kimberleys, Karajini National Park etc. In those places, it was my intention to generally do nothing - a dying art in our society. Follow the rationale link to learn more about the psychology behind the design rationale.
The Canter is designed to facilitate the doing of nothing by being self contained for power, shower, toilet, cooking, lounging and sleeping facilities.
The project is already in it's third incarnation as I made some mistakes and rather than try to fix them, I started again - follow the History link to learn some of the things not to do when building a 4x4 motorhome - I'm sure you'll discover plenty more of your own if you too are struck with the urge to turn an old truck into skinned knuckles, maxxed out credit card and a slow moving off-road motorhome.
